Established in 1979, Horry County Museum was later opened to the public in 1981. This museum's mission is to collect and preserve material related to the prehistory, natural history, history, and culture of Horry County; interpret and create exhibits of materials, and prepare educational programs related to them.
Over the years they have added exhibits including a Living history farm that highlights the life of a family on a horse farm between the years 1900 to 1955. When the museum moved to the renovated 1905 Burroughs School, a place on the National Register of Historic Places, they were able to open a freshwater aquarium and 600-seat auditorium.
